Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The U.N. General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
The United Nations invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.
The International Day of Peace, sometimes unofficially known as World Peace Day, is observed annually on 21 September. It is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. The day was first celebrated in 1982, and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and peoples. In 2013, for the first time, the Day was dedicated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to peace education, the key preventive means to reduce war sustainably.
To inaugurate the day, the United Nations Peace Bell is rung at UN Headquarters (in New York City). The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa, and was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, as “a reminder of the human cost of war”; the inscription on its side reads, “Long live absolute world peace”.
The theme of 2015’s commemoration is “Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All” which aims to highlight the importance of all segments of society to work together to strive for peace.
On September 21, 2014, I believe that the U.N. International Day of Peace celebration was observed at Fríkirkjan í Reykjavík (the Free Church in Reykjavik), if the translation of this source I obtained is accurate.
A description of last year’s event is at upf.org: International Day of Peace Celebrated in Iceland; you should find a few further descriptions mixed into the various references that follow below.
This year, the ceremony will involve some sort of “bridge of peace,” and will be held at the Lutheran church Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík on September 24, apparently.
At this time, I can offer nothing more about this year’s event other than this to-the-point Icelandic poster Rohan Nandkisore (the Secretary General of the Iceland chapter of the Universal Peace Foundation) provided me:
And now today ─ September 9, 2015 ─ Rohan kindly forwarded me a further pair of posters heralding the planned September 24th event. The first is the English version, while the second is Icelandic:
What I have for you below are articles and reports relating to past events in Iceland, as well as other various types of peace initiatives in Iceland and around the World; and just about anything else that I think might pique the interest of any visitor to this post.

In the epicenter of the world financial crisis, a comedian launched a joke campaign that didn’t seem so funny to the country’s leading politicians . . .
It all started when Jón Gnarr founded the Best Party in 2009 to satirize his country’s political system. The financial collapse in Iceland had, after all, precipitated the world-wide meltdown, and fomented widespread protest over the country’s leadership.
Entering the race for mayor of Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital, Gnarr promised to get the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park into downtown parks, free towels at public swimming pools, a “drug-free Parliament by 2020” . . . and he swore he’d break all his campaign promises.
But then something strange started happening: his campaign began to succeed. And in the party’s electoral debut, the Best Party emerged as the biggest winner. Gnarr promptly proposed a coalition government, although he ruled out partners who had not seen all five seasons of The Wire.
And just like that, a man whose previous foreign-relations experience consisted of a radio show (in which he regularly crank-called the White House and police stations in the Bronx to see if they had found his lost wallet) was soon meeting international leaders and being taken seriously as the mayor of a European capital.
Here, Gnarr recounts how it all happened and, with admirable candor, describes his vision of a more enlightened politics for the future. The point, he writes, is not to be afraid to get involved—or to take on the system.

Peace education is now well recognized within international legal instruments and within critical educational literature as an important aspect of education. Despite this, little attention has been given in the critical literature to the philosophical foundations for peace education and the rationale for peace education thus remains substantially an assumed one. This investigation explores some possible ethico-philosophical foundations for peace education, through an examination of five specific ethical traditions:
1) virtue ethics, whereby peace may be interpreted as a virtue, and/or virtue is interpreted as peacefulness, and peace education as education in that virtue;
2) consequentialist ethics, whereby peace education may be interpreted as education regarding the consequences of our action and inaction, both as individuals and collectivities;
3) conservative political ethics, whereby peace education may be interpreted as emphasizing the importance of the evolution of social institutions and the importance of ordered and lawful social change;
4) aesthetic ethics, whereby peace may be interpreted as something beautiful and valuable in itself, and peace education as emphasizing the importance of that beauty and value; and
5) the ethics of care, whereby care may be interpreted as a core element in peace, and peace education as encouraging trust and engagement with the other.
The study addresses major contributions to each of these ethical traditions, the strengths and weaknesses of the tradition, and the ways in which the tradition provides support for peace education. It is argued in the thesis that each tradition provides only a partial basis for peace education, and that ultimately a holistic and integrative understanding is required, one that encourages a culture of peace. ” . . . an important addition to the emerging literature on peace education and the culture of peace” (from the Foreword by Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of Unesco).

Peace is a priority for God, and therefore, it should be a priority for us as well. Indeed, we are instructed to seek peace with others. But in today’s world, tranquility is hard to come by. If we don’t have it ourselves, seeking it with others is an impossible task.
How do we find peace? As Joyce Meyer explains, by submitting our will to God. When we follow our own desires, we forfeit serenity; but, by obeying God’s guidance, we ensure ourselves peace-filled living. Maintaining peace is a choice. We are given the keys to a peaceful life, but must choose to live in and follow that peace. If we are not actively seeking God’s will, we will walk in anxiety and dissension and ultimately become ineffective. For when we lose our compass, we lose our direction.
In this book, Joyce Meyer discusses the pursuit of true peace–from how to be at peace with yourself and the importance of having peace with God to enjoying peaceful relationships, being led by peace, developing a peaceful attitude, and the paradox that peace equals power.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent Whose official name is “Day of Ashes,” Ash Wednesday, firstly called dies cinerum (day of ashes) is mentioned in the initial copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary, and perhaps dates from at least the 8th Century.
Ash Wednesday often features different festival or Mardi Gras celebrations in many countries. Ash Wednesday has some variations across cultures. For example, some children in Iceland go from door to door and sing songs for treats on the day.
Lent is intended to be a time of self-denial, moderation, fasting, and the forsaking of sinful activities and habits. Ash Wednesday commences this period of spiritual discipline. Ash Wednesday and Lent are observed by most Catholics and some Protestant denominations.
